Sweet 16
Our Neighbor the Olympian
Allen Off to College
Allen left for his freshman year at BYU at the end of August. We drove with the whole family to drop him off and made a detour through Zion National Park on the way. After checking in at the Zion Lodge, we hopped on the shuttle to the trailhead for Angel's Landing. Everyone made it to the saddle overlook and Jane, Julia and Dad pressed on to the top. The top of Angel's Landing is one of the most beautiful places on earth. On the shuttle ride back, Julia made the comment that something on the shuttle smelled like tacos. It was actually a european traveller sitting in front of us who had ripe B.O. Julia's comment became the joke for the rest of the trip. If something smelled bad, we would say that something smelled like "tacos."
The Lodge is situated just down the canyon from Angel's Landing and also in an incredibly lovely spot. There is a huge cottonwood tree on the lawn in front of the Lodge that provides a nice spot for lounging in the shade during the heat of the day. The Lodge itself is quite ordinary but the scenery just outside your room is second to none. Room rates are about $150 per night and we were able to make last minute reservations. 4 Beavers for the Zion Lodge.
The next morning Cathy and I took a tandem ride to the end of the canyon and then down to Sprindale to pick up some groceries. After a breakfast of yogurt, granola and fruit, we hopped on the shuttle again to the trailhead for the Narrows. We hiked up the slot canyon for an hour and half or so and had much fun in the water. It is our family's favorite. 5 Beavers for the Narrows hike.
Instead of heading back to I-15, we drove out the east entrance to Zion and up Highway 89. We stopped in Richfield at the Ideal Dairy for an ice cream cone. The Ideal Dairy is an old fashioned lunch counter with sandwiches, shakes, and ice cream. They make all of their own ice cream. Their Maple Nut ice cream was superb. 4 Beavers for the Ideal Dairy.
We arrived at Nana and Grandpa's house later that night and checked Allen into the dorms the next morning. After getting him situated with his books and some groceries, we bid our son farewell with hope that he wouldn't starve to death and that he would occasionaly wash his underwear.

Best buds towards Angels Landing.
